From IT support to data centre technician
Data centre technicians do the physical side of IT: racking servers, running cabling, swapping failed parts and acting as "smart hands" for customers who can't be on site. If you already support hardware, much of it will be familiar.
What changes
Equinix describes its customer operations staff as installing and maintaining "physical hardware like servers and cabling" and providing 24/7 support, so expect shifts, including nights. The Level 3 Information communications technician apprenticeship (ST0973) covers helpdesk, network and data centre support technician roles in one standard, which shows how closely the jobs are related.
Certifications that come up
- CompTIA A+ for general hardware and support skills, and CompTIA Server+ for server hardware. Microsoft's data centre technician careers page lists CompTIA A+, Server+ and Network+, plus Basic Structure Cabling, as applicable certifications.
- Data centre courses such as CDCP or CNet's CDCTP. CNet says data centre experience is essential before its CDCTP, so it suits people already in the job. Compare courses.
